‘Game Of Thrones’: Tom Wlaschiha On Jaqen, Waif & Training Arya

After a two season absence, Tom Wlaschiha recently returned to “Game of Thrones” as Jaqen H’ghar.

The reunion though, between Arya Stark and her mysterious friend from her Harrenhal days, involved a lot more mystery (and chores) than the young woman expected.

“After Season 2, everybody thought, ‘OK, they’re great friends and even though they had their little misunderstandings, they’re great friends,’ so to me it was important when we started off doing Season 5 that Jaqen also shows a different side — that it’s not immediately just because she’s found him, all is good,” Tom told Access Hollywood. “So he’s very demanding with her and he’s certainly not going to make it easy on her, the whole training.”

In the “High Sparrow” episode, Arya attempted to show Jaqen she was ready to begin her training to become one of the Faceless Men when she tossed her belongings (except for Needle, which she hid) into the sea. After she returned to the House of Black and White, Jaqen upgraded her responsibilities (from sweeping to corpse washing).

“In Season 2, he always saw a lot of potential in her, and in Season 2 she was very young, she was very impulsive. I mean, had she named the right three names, she could have ended the whole story right there, but she didn’t know better,” Tom said, with a laugh, when Access asked what makes Arya a good apprentice.

“But now, she has grown into a young woman and now she’s more thoughtful and she actually – she’s able to make much more of what Jaqen teaches her, and I think he wants her to become more conscious or to teach her and then use that knowledge to her advantage,” he added.

As for the other character involved in the House of Black and White storyline – Waif, played by “The White Queen’s” Faye Marsay — Tom said there will be more from the stick-wielding woman going forward.

“We have a few scenes over the course of the season. I really liked acting with her because, again, it’s a character… that seems to have a secret and we don’t immediately see what it is or what it could be and yeah, that’s what makes it interesting,” he said.

Jaqen H’ghar clearly has secrets too (note: he has pointed out to Arya that Jaqen isn’t his name – he’s “no one”). One fan theory is that Jaqen is actually Syrio Forel, Arya’s water dancing teacher from Season 1.

“I heard about the theory, I’ve read about the theory on the Internet and I have no idea if there is any truth in it or if there’s potential,” Tom said. “I personally — I don’t think so, but I couldn’t give you good reasons.”

“Game of Thrones” continues Sundays at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO.
