George Clooney: ‘I’m Marrying Up’

He’s an Oscar winner and been labeled the Sexiest Man Alive (twice!), but George Clooney said he’s the lucky one when it comes to his impending marriage to activist/lawyer Amal Alamuddin.

“I’m marrying up,” the 53-year-old star told Variety in a new interview, when asked about his upcoming wedding.

The “Gravity” star also spoke about his recent calling-out of the UK’s Daily Mail, after the paper published a story claiming Amal’s mother objected to her daughter marrying George, but later deleted the article and apologized for the story after the actor said the story was false in an op-ed he penned for USA Today.

“I would sit with my friends and we’d just go, ‘So they just sat at a computer and just went, ‘OK, this is what I’m gonna say today.’ I mean, literally, because you just go ‘here isn’t literally an element of truth in this,'” he said. “You just laugh, and let it go. I’m used to it after all these years. But the thing that bothers me is how much the Daily Mail is now bleeding into American press and becoming a source for some pretty legitimate newspapers. So that’s the thing that worries me.”

While George is used to being the subject of tabloid gossip, he said he has learned to choose his battles wisely, and couldn’t let this one go.

“That’s why you pick your fights at a tabloid. Every day they write things that aren’t true, but every once in a while they write something that is actually dangerous to your family, and it’s probably not true,” he said. “And that’s the one you pick.”

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, news of George and Amal’s engagement broke in late April.

This will be George’s second marriage – he was previously married to “Mad Men” actress Talia Balsam from 1989 – 1993.
