George Newbern: Charlie Was Originally A Small ‘Scandal’ Role

B613 assassin Charlie is a mainstay on “Scandal,” but George Newbern, who plays the superspy on the ABC drama, said his role was initially meant to be very small.

“[I signed on for] one. It was two or three days of work,” George told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Wednesday’s Access Hollywood Live. “It sort of turned into close to 30 episodes so far.”

“What was the moment with [creator] Shonda [Rhimes] where she said, ‘Let’s continue?’” Billy asked.

“I’m not exactly sure, but I suspect it has to do with the fact that you’ve got all these storylines going on and I think it’s great to have a character like him that can sort of help tie things together a little bit,” George answered. “And plus, I think there was some fun to him.

“The show can be so serious all the time,” he added, laughing.

The actor also weighed in on the awkward love triangle between Charlie, Quinn (Katie Lowes) and Huck (Guillermo Diaz), admitting he’s “not happy” about Quinn’s recent parking lot hookup with Huck.

“It’s like [we’re] on a grade school playground. You’ve got a love triangle with a bunch of people who don’t know what real love is and what real relationships are,” he said. “They’re just lobbing guesses at how this is supposed to go. It’s messy.”

The “Scandal” Season 3 finale airs Thursday at 10/9c on ABC.
