Glam Slam: A Dress That Impressed

My husband Richard and I went to a wedding in Santa Ynez wine country this weekend and had such a good time… it was one of the most beautiful weddings we’ve ever been to.

Of course, when I originally got the invitation, which requested formal wear, I panicked a bit because I don’t have any fancy schmancy clothes like that.

But then I remembered the dark grey long dress I bought earlier this year that was sitting in my closet waiting to be worn. I hesitated when I saw it in the store because I didn’t have anywhere to wear it, but I’m so glad I bought it!

The most awesome part? The dress (pictured) was only $89 at Zara!

I added a sparkly Vera Wang belt I’ve had for years, a five dollar black wrap I bought off the street in New York and my black Jimmy Choo heels that I bought to wear to the Oscars. (OK, those were expensive!) Voila — a wedding outfit!

I was surprised to get so many compliments on the dress. My friend Maurine laughed as she said I was “amazing” because whenever she asks where I got something, it’s always from somewhere like Zara, H & M or Forever 21. My friend David complimented my “very pretty dress” on Facebook and asked if it was J. Mendel! I was laughing out loud over that one — I WISH I could afford J. Mendel!

Anyway, I guess the point for all us gals who can’t afford designer clothes is to hang in there. Style is supposed to be about how you look, not how much something costs, right? I could argue that everyone was looking at the bride anyway (who looked absolutely stunning btw), so it really doesn’t matter.

But in a sea of Ralph Lauren, Dior and Marchesa, I guess I did alright.
