Glam Slam: Fall Fashion Week: Top 5 Trends

It’s actually been cloudy and cooler in Los Angeles the last couple of days, probably as close to “fall” as we will get out here. It’s been a nice break from the heat and it makes me want to wheel out the fall fashions! For some inspiration on the new season styles, InStyle Market Director Erin Sumwalt shares five fall trends and how to wear them.

LONGER SKIRT LENGTHS
We are seeing this below-the-knee skirt length in prints, pleats and plaids. It’s a great new alternative for the office. If you’re tall, you can wear this length with flats, but if you’re on the shorter side, heels are a must. Got an hourglass shape? Show it off by pairing your long skirt with a fitted cashmere sweater. (see Angelina Jolie photo)

MIXING PRINTS
There are lots of great mixes for fall. We especially loved those seen on the runways of Dries Van Noten, Proenza Schouler and Prada. When attempting to mix prints from your own wardrobe, find pieces that share a color palette and go from there. If two printed clothing items is too much for you, try pairing a printed dress with a printed accessory, such as a shoe or clutch. (see Kristen Bell photo)

MENSWEAR BOTTOMS

Easy-to-wear menswear-inspired trousers and shorts were welcomed back on designer runways this fall. (see Drew Barrymore photo) The new pant silhouette is a bit tapered at the bottom of the leg and is sure to become a new go-to work staple. Wear them with your prettiest, most feminine chiffon or lace blouses. The same goes for tailored shorts — just be sure to add a pair of tights.

MINIMALISM
As seen at Celine, Calvin Klein Collection and Stella McCartney, the minimalism trend is all about perfectly fitted garments and accessories that stand on their own without the distractions of embellishments. Going monochromatic keeps the look chic and polished.

TOP-HANDLE BAGS
The ultimate in lady-like perfection, top-handle bags were shown on the fall runways of Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs. Done in fabric, luxurious skins and even knits, the updated and refined lines of these bags look perfect with your tailored pieces.
