Glam Slam: Fashion In The Facebook Age – I Like It!

Facebook turned 10 this week. 10! Before Snapchat, before Instagram, before Twitter, there was Facebook and we had no idea how much it would change our lives, redefine our lives… including our style.

Facebook became more than just a way to reconnect and catch up with long-lost friends and boyfriends and girlfriends. It’s a visual record of how we look, how we are constantly changing and our changing styles.

It’s where you can see what all your friends wore out on New Year’s Eve, or how your college roommate looked on her wedding day at the destination wedding you couldn’t make.

I’ve had many a FB friend ask me while I am on an award show red carpet, what the stars are wearing and how they look.

It’s also a place to ask for and get fashion feedback. A place to share your recent purchases. Just last week, one of my oldest childhood friends proudly showed off a major purchase she had saved up for — a gorgeous red Chanel bag that she bought on a trip to New York. I was so happy for her and so were many others who oohed and aahed over the bag and gave her post lots of “Likes.”

We love to embarrass ourselves… and others… on Facebook too… exposing questionable fashion choices and bad hair days! Was my hair really that big back in the day? As a Southern girl, I can say, “You bet it was!”

Of course, Facebook is just the tip of the social media iceberg these days, there are many, many ways to show off your selfies. But it was a game changer…and you know what? I still “Like” it.
