Glam Slam: Get A Green Mani-Pedi!

Getting a green mani-pedi doesn’t necessarily mean the color you choose! Eco-friendly nail salons are popping up across the country… but what exactly makes a nail salon green? One of the leading environmentally friendly nail salons is Recess Nail Spa in Los Angeles (Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway and Alicia Silverstone are all clients) so I went to owner Nidhi Lal to find out!

Nidhi reveals she researched everything for over a year and a half to go as green as she could when she opened Recess.

For Nidhi this was important because “building a green, non-toxic and sustainable space is better for the environment and the personal health of all individuals that come into that space.” Also, “a typical nail salon has harsh fumes that are detrimental to one’s lungs… I was committed to creating a space that wouldn’t weigh on my conscience.”

There are tons of ways that make the Recess Nail Spa environmentally responsible. Here are just a few:

Recess is constructed as per LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) guidelines. All furnishings are custom built as per LEED
Recess uses bamboo/cotton blended towels manufactured at a wind powered plant using low impact dyes.

Recess uses non-toxic Zoya and Spa Ritual nail polishes and non-toxic nail treatments.

Recess’ line of products, used during services, are derived from natural and organic ingredients.

Manicure and pedicure stools are eco-friendly (the pedicure ones were custom-built to be green).

Finding a salon like Recess near you may require a bit of research, but checking online is a good bet. Also, when you book an appointment, make sure to ask questions to find out how green the salon is. More and more of these are cropping up. In fact, Nidhi is getting phone calls and emails from around the country regarding the salon’s construction and her product choices.
