Glam Slam: Goof Proof Gorgeous Makeup

A smokey eye or red lips are classic, but tricky to nail and also very high maintenance, especially if you are makeup challenged like I am. It’s easy to end up with raccoon eyes or bright lipstick that bleeds and gets all over your teeth, not to mention, it’s hard to pick the exactly right shade of red.

If you want something decidedly less bold, but equally beautiful, go for some tried and true makeup looks and colors that work… for everyone! InStyle beauty director Amy Synnott-D’Annibale picks the most universally flattering makeup essentials for any complexion.

1. Sheer pink gloss
Light shades like this pop on medium to dark skin and add subtle sparkle to fairer skin tones. The best part? They make lips appear fuller and never look overdone. Try Fresh Sugar Lip Gloss in Sugar Fairy, $18, fresh.com.

2. Pinkish brown liner
The closest approximation to real lip color out there, this light neutral shade blends easily into the border, allowing all complexions to avoid the dreaded “VPL” (visible lip liner) effect. Try Josie Maran Lip Liner in Peach, $18, sephora.com.

3. Peach blush
Not too pink and not too red, this warm shade adds a completely believable flush to every skin tone. Try Sally Hansen Natural Beauty inspired by Carmindy Sheerest Cream Blush in Beaming, $9, at drugstores.

4. Dark chocolate liner
Less harsh than black, this rich shade is deep enough to show up on olive and dark skin but won’t look severe against lighter skin. Try Avon’s Smooth Minerals Eye Liner in Earth, $6, avon.com.

5. Purple/gold shadow
Neither cool nor warm, purple works on all skin tones because it’s neutral. A touch of gold on the inner corners of the eyes makes them look bigger and brighter. Get the look with DuWop Brown Eye Intensifier Eyecatcher Shadows, $19, sephora.com.

6. Nude eye pencil
Applied to the inner rim of the lower lid, a light peachy-beige pencil, like Three Custom Color Eye Pencil in Light Clarifier, $16.50, threecustom.com, makes the whites of the eye look whiter and the rims look less red. Think of it as a shot of espresso for your lids!
