Glam Slam: Happy Holidays — Donna Karan Style!

Known for her impeccable style and taste, as well as her charitable work, Donna Karan is one of the most famous designers around. She is adored by both Hollywood stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Hudson and Demi Moore and the real women she designs for too. Now Donna shares her own personal holiday tips with Glam Slam:

DECOR
To me, holidays are all about family and loved ones. I like to keep the décor festive yet casual because you want everyone to relax and have a good time. I’m going to be at my home in Parrot Cay, which is in the Turks and Caicos, so I will keep it white and simple with lots of glittering lights. In the city, it’s the same. I usually have a Fraser fir tree covered in white lights and sheer white ribbon. The ornaments are silver, cream and glass. There is a large wreath of Noble fir on the wall with a big sheer gold bow on it. All the window ledges in the living and dining room are lined with a mix of pine, berries and gold dusted pinecones. The branches are sprinkled with white quince. In the elevator hall we do a 3’ tall moss covered reindeer… he is sitting down with his legs crossed and his antlers are wrapped in little white lights. Everything twinkles and looks beautiful.

My decor embraces all of the senses. The cut flowers are white Winter peonies. I light dozens of candles everywhere, many of them Cashmere Mist for the warm scent of luxe – these candles make great stocking stuffers too. And I have music going all day. I love all the classics, especially classics reinterpreted with a bluesy beat. It all works to create an environment that is warm, inviting and festive.

GIFTS
I love anything that gives back. I love when people give to a cause in your name, volunteer their time and resources, or simply a generous donation to something they passionately believe in. One year I gave all the women in my life a donation in their name for Women for Women International, a fabulous organization that helps women survivors of war around the world rebuild their lives. Each recipient’s gift sponsors a particular woman who keeps in touch with them throughout the year. You see the difference you make.

On the other end of the spectrum, I love to give cashmere to everyone on my list. It’s simply the most decadent, indulgent sensual thing to wrap around your skin. If you give it to a baby, they immediately form an addiction because it’s the only thing you want next to you. There are many ways to give cashmere, including my Cashmere Mist, inspired by the sensation of fabric against bare skin. The bath products, especially the lotion, are divine.

DRESS
Since I’ll be at my home in Parrot Cay, I’ll start with a bodysuit for my daily morning yoga practice. Then I’ll either add a white caftan or wrap on a sarong, and add my favorite Namibian leather beads. It’s a look that takes me day into night. The most important thing for the holidays is to feel good about what you’re wearing and to be comfortable. I love flats for that reason — ballet slippers are as good as going barefoot.

TRADITIONS
The most important tradition you can have is to be together. My entire family will be with me, all the kids and grandkids. We’ll swim, we’ll eat, we’ll watch movies and we’ll exchange a ton of gifts. It’s the togetherness you remember most.
