Glam Slam: ‘Mad’ ‘Dos

We’ve all seen those photos of stars with their looks-like-I-just-rolled-out-of-bed hair. Beachy waves are fun, but this fall it’s all about volume. One way to get it? Go for a “Mad Men” inspired ‘60s up-do like Drew Barrymore, who seems to have channeled the sexy secretary style of Christina Hendricks’ “Joan” with her beautiful up-do.

To recreate this look, Theodore Leaf, stylist at celebrity salon Sally Hershberger Los Angeles, suggests starting with hair washed the day before. “You’ll have much more success creating up-dos when the hair isn’t too fresh.”

“Use a dry shampoo at the roots to soak up any oiliness and create amazing volume. Once you have prepped the hair, make a Mohawk section on the top of head and clip it out of the way.

Next, pull the rest of your hair into a loose ponytail and twist all of the hair in an upward direction. Using bobby pins (that match your hair color) to loosely secure the seam of the twist to the back of your head.

Then, you want to use a light mist of a medium-hold aerosol hairspray on the roots of your Mohawk section and give them a light tease, the spray will ensure the style lasts all night.

Choose where you want your deep side part. Use the end of a rat-tail comb to perfect it and smooth the top.

Finally, join the tease to the twist with a few more bobby pins; this will keep the look soft and modern. A final spray for fly-aways and you’re out the door.”

“One of the best things about a great up-do is that it will last all night, so you can focus on having fun, instead of worrying about your hair!” Theodore says.
