Glam Slam: Makeup Mondays — Olympic Beauty Inspiration

Kate Middleton met with British swim team at the Olympics last week, where bronze medal winner Rebecca Adlington admired the Duchess of Cambridge’s navy wedges, Tweeting that “they’re much nicer than the sports gear we’re wearing this week.”

True, there’s not a lot of glamour at the games, especially for female athletes, who will spend most of their time in team uniforms with minimal makeup. Yet, athletes like the Fierce Five Gymnasts and Volleyball superstars Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh are showcasing the perfect balance of sporty and chic despite the intense pressure of the games.

While most of us are not in the global spotlight, having the confidence to show a fresh, natural looking face in front of a crowd is something we can all appreciate, whether it’s for a work presentation, a wedding or a PTA meeting.

Celebrity makeup artist Carmindy, from TLC’s “What Not to Wear,” shares tips for every woman, no matter what her age, to look fabulous and achieve that Olympian glow!

Start With The Basics:
Sun protection & moisturizer: don’t forget your basic training. Even if you aren’t outdoors as much as Misty and Kerri, sunscreen will save your skin! Every gal should lather up with sunscreen right after moisturizing. I like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 55+, to ward off premature aging, skin cancer and wrinkles. Just like a good warm up stretch, this will prep your skin to look its best for your big moment!

Medal in Makeup:
Gold, silver and bronze are not just for wearing around your neck. Shadows and highlighters in these colors should be staples in every woman’s beauty bag. Not only do they make a statement with subtle shimmer, the shadow will go the distance if you use sheer powders that won’t fade or get greasy. For paler skin, I recommend gold eye shadow. Place it on the inner corners of the eyes and sweep it along the brown bone. Darker skinned gals should look for a bronze shadow that will play up the eyes.

Say Cheese:
Showing a little teeth makes you appear confident and approachable. A smile conveys warmth and an eagerness to connect with others. Keep your lips simple with a tinted lip balm like Bobbi Brown Tinted Lip Balm. It will give off a subtle pop of color and shine.

Get That Athlete Glow:
A cheek stain will give you a natural, sweatproof flush. Perfect under harsh spotlights. For darker skin, one of my favorites is Tarte’s Maracuja Cheek Tint in Deep Berry. For fair skin, I recommend Benefit’s Benetint. Remember, a cream blush looks great at first but won’t have the staying power of a stain on days when you need to be camera-ready all day.

Camera-Ready 24/7:
Easy does it. Piling on the mascara can cause clumpy lashes which are nothing to cheer about. Choose a waterproof formulation of mascara to prevent the product from dripping down the face at an inopportune moment. When I turned 40, I got up close and personal with my own lashes and noticed they have been thinning as I got older. My dermatologist recommended LATISSE, and after a few months I have noticed that my lashes have been growing longer, thicker and darker. It has been fun watching them grow and I can feel camera-ready even without my eye makeup on!

Under the Microscope:
Keep a pack of blotting papers handy and right before you step on “stage” blot away any trace of pre-presentation jitters.
