Glam Slam: Makeup Mondays — The Green Week Edition

In celebration of Earth Day this Thursday, we are all about being green this week! We kick things off with an easy way to do something for the environment (and look beautiful at the same time!)… greening your makeup bag!

Suki Kramer, eco expert and founder of suki, inc., a line of organic botanical makeup and skincare products that are a fave of Katherine Heigl, Eva Longoria Parker and Thandie Newton, says “It’s about reducing our toxic load, not being perfect… and when we know what we can eliminate and still get great benefits from, why not choose those things?”

Why not indeed! Here are Suki’s suggestions for being eco-chic when it comes to your makeup bag.

1. Try to multi-task with your products – i.e. use your eye cream as lip balm or lip stain as cheek color – the less baggage, the less packaging consumed and wasted. Plus it’s a time saver!

2. Look for moisturizers that contain SPF in them to protect your skin from the harsh rays. Only use products that contain PHYSICAL blocks like zinc and titanium oxides, not chemical, cancer causing sunscreens. ***Remember, sun blocks clog pores so be sure to cleanse the skin once you are in for the day, especially if you are prone to blemishing.

3. Try to use a lip palette, instead of carrying multiple lip products and increase packaging. My lip trio is perfect for this because it contains day to night looks as well as a lip protectant in fully green packaging that is totally portable.

4. Steer away from products that contain phenoxyethanol, parabens, dimethecone, synthetic fragrances and artificial coloring – all are allergenic ingredients in skin care products. Look especially for natural hair products and nail colorants, which are far less toxic than synthetics versions. Synthetics are a proven carcinogenic. There are an abundant amount of alternatives out there now to synthetics.

5. Avoid misleading words and marketing ploys and ALWAYS check the ingredient panel no matter what.

6. Look for makeup that specifically lists that they are both non-comodogenic and cruelty-free.

7. Try to look for products in glass & aluminum packaging, instead of plastic to ensure a healthier planet.
