Glam Slam: Oscar Hair

Our Oscar Week Countdown continues and today it’s all about the hair! Celebrity Hairstylist Jessica Tingley, who has worked with Heidi Klum, Anne Hathaway, Ellen Pompeo and Kerry Washington, reveals her hair trend predictions for the Academy Awards.

“I am expecting the hair to be very clean and simply elegant,” Jessica says. “In recent years it has been more, more, more. More hair, more makeup, more jewels. I think showing some restraint looks fresh now.”

“Remember Gwyneth Paltrow’s Oscar moment where her simple chignon showcased her face, graceful neck and shoulders? Sometimes the simplest looks create a maximum impact.”

“I feel like this year it is going to be all about the dress. So hair will be a little simpler than in years past to avoid competing with the dress.

Spring 2010 had a lot of Romanticism on the runways with full sweeping skirts, lots of ruffles and embellishments. A more modern futuristic look reminiscent of the ‘80s was also a big trend. This all points to the hair being pulled up into soft looking, simple up-dos. Think Grace Kelly and Katharine Hepburn. Clean and simple is anything but boring. It’s classic and elegant.”

“I love this clean look on Penelope Cruz. She often wears her hair up and it always looks beautiful and balances the silhouette of a big dress. I love to see Sandra Bullock looking clean and elegant. It seems to fit her sensibilities. I love to see her hair pulled away from her face. Diane Kruger will be perfection as usual and would look great in a clean classic chignon with some volume at the top like Grace Kelly.”

“Big barrel waves will be popular too. Who can resist embracing full on old Hollywood glamour at the Oscars? This year it will be more subtle and pulled away from the face, or glamorously falling in a deep side part held in place with a vintage jeweled brooch as a barrette. Oscar Nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal looks amazing with beautiful old school waves. I have done her hair too and she prefers a simple look, but for award shows she rocks glamour.”

The Academy Awards air Sunday March 7th on ABC.

BTW – Throwing your own Oscar viewing party? Online invitation site Cocodot (Gwyneth Paltrow and David Arquette are fans) is a great way to get the party started in style.
