Glam Slam: Oscar Week — Shoe Business

“Will you please pinch me?” I asked Tamara Mellon, the Founder and President of Jimmy Choo. “I gotta make sure I’m awake and this is not a dream!”

After all, how cool is it to be at the posh Jimmy Choo store on Rodeo Drive with THE driving force behind one of the most luxurious brands in the world?! If anyone can understand my shoe obsession, it’s Tamara! And I asked the glamorous mogul what trends we can expect to see at the Oscars.

“Well, the big trend really is height,” Tamara revealed. “All the actresses really want high shoes. They want to be tall. They want big platforms. The platform is still really popular.”

And platforms are one of the beautiful styles in Tamara’s new shoe collection, which also includes everything from dressy high heels to more casual flats.

“I just launched Choo 24:7, which means 24 hours, 7 days a week. It’s really to fulfill all of the needs of a woman’s life. So this can take you all the way up to black tie red carpet and it’s also great if you’re running around doing appointments. I chose 27 of my favorite styles for this collection, because they’re really pieces that I wanted to keep in my closet going forward. They come in 6 different colors and materials in each style and prices range from $395 to $1295.”

“I really launched this collection as investment pieces for women. These are shoes that they can keep in their closet and they’re timeless. They look modern and edgy but they certainly won’t be going out of fashion. You can still come to Jimmy Choo for your really fashion forward pieces but these… will stand the test of time.”

Then my Cinderella moment came and I got to try on several pairs. It didn’t start out so great though. The first pair I tried, a glittery black peep-toe with a super high heel, didn’t fit! I joked that this must make me the ugly stepsister, who can’t get her foot into the glass slipper!

Take two. The bigger size fit and I instantly felt taller, sleeker and slimmer. A pair of killer silver platforms even looked good with the jeans I had on and would be perfect for a night on the town, as well as a red carpet event.

As I tried on shoes, I chatted with Tamara about – what else, shoes! I asked her if she ever worried about not being able to come up with something new. And she said no that she always finds new inspiration. I also asked her if she felt like she had to wear different shoes all the time – after all – she is the brand’s best advertisement. She admitted that she does have her favorite shoes and has to occasionally remind herself to wear others.

We didn’t just talk shoes. Tamara also gave me a sneak peak at her favorite purse for Spring. A mix of suede and snakeskin, it features lady-like gold chain straps and lots of fringe and is very cool.

“This is the new Tatum bag and she is just my favorite, she’s just arrived. Perfect for running around doing all your appointments. And it makes you look modern and hip.”

I love that Tamara refers to each of her bags and shoes as a “she.” She does bring them to life, so I don’t blame her for feeling a connection to them. I asked her if she ever gets bummed that she makes these beautiful shoes and at an event like the Oscars everyone has on long gowns and you don’t get to see them so much?

“I know, we need a foot camera,” she joked. Good idea, good idea.
