Glam Slam: Swapping Is The New Shopping!

You know the saying “champagne dreams on a beer budget.” Who can’t relate to that these days? While many a fashionista has probably dreamed of owning Carrie Bradshaw’s closet, her sea of designer goods would have most of us drowning in debt.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t update your wardrobe. You can still be frugal and still look fabulous. How? Save money by swapping instead of shopping!

Catey Hill, author of ‘Shoo, Jimmy Choo! The Modern Girl’s Guide to Spending Less and Saving More’ (Sterling, $14.95) and the money editor for the New York Daily News online, shares three ways to get in on one of the hottest trends – the clothing swap:

1. Check out great new clothing swap Web sites
These Web sites let you trade your clothes and accessories with others around the globe.

Swapstyle.com: From Marc Jacobs to Prada to Kate Spade, this fashion swap has one of the largest selections of swappable clothes and accessories in the world.

DigNSwap.com: This easy-to-use swap site lets you search for items by brand, type of clothing/accessory or size and has tons of great items guaranteed to make you drool.

RehashClothes.com: This swap site is great because you can join groups on the site with others who have similar clothing interests to you.

2. Find a swap in your area
For those of you who aren’t so keen on the online swap, you might want to try to find a local swap party or someone to swap with in your area. Here are some sites to make it happen:

Meetup.com and ClothesSwap.Meetup.com: These sites offer listings of clothing swap “meet ups” in many areas around the country.

Craigslist.org: The barter section on this site sometimes lists clothing and accessories, though depending on the size of your city/town, there may not be a lot of choose from. The upside is that you can meet the seller and see the items in person since you both live in the same area.

3. Host your own swap party
If all this online swapping isn’t your thing, tap into your network of family and friends and arrange a “swap night.” Have everyone bring over the items they’d like to swap and exchange to your heart’s desire. If you don’t have a large enough network for a swap, try going on Meetup.com or Craigslist.com and arranging one in your community.
