Glam Slam: That’s A Wrap!

The Oscars are over, ending an intensive three-month award show season. Think you have a hard time finding something to wear? How about the nominated actresses who needed a different (and equally beautiful) gown for every award show they attended. Phew! Fun, but at the same time, it’s an enormous amount of pressure. Playing Monday morning fashionista quarterback… what red carpet trends worked? And what didn’t? We break it all down.

WHITE WORKS
White never goes out of style and Kate Hudson proved that – twice. She went high fashion in a strapless corseted Marchesa paired with fierce Casadei platforms at the Golden Globes. And then sleek in a slinky white backless Emilio Pucci at the SAG Awards. Meryl Streep showed us all how 60 is done with the plunging white Chris March gown she wore to the Oscars.

METALLICS SHINE
Sandra Bullock’s hand beaded Marchesa at the Oscars was elegant and classy. At the Globes, Jennifer Garner’s Atelier Versace was sexy and shimmery. Beyonce delivered drama in spades at the Grammys with her plunging silver and gold chain metal Armani Prive mini. Whether it’s silver, gold or bronze, metallics can be extremely flattering. Added bonus? They match any hardware you end up winning!

COLORS POP
Gabby Sidibe rocked bright colors during award season and it really worked for her. Sapphire blue at the Oscars, emerald green at the Globes and majestic purple at the SAG awards. Marion Cotillard’s forest green satin Dior gown brought sophistication to the Globes, while Anna Kendrick looked lovely in vibrant purple Alberta Ferretti at the SAG Awards.

BLUSHING BEAUTIES
On the other end of the spectrum… pale pastels, blush and nude shades were also popular. Emily Blunt wowed in a blush Dolce & Gabbana at the Globes.

At the Oscars, Jennifer Lopez dazzled in pale pink Armani Prive, while Demi Moore worked a strapless nude ruffled Atelier Versace.

STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD…
I love that Carey Mulligan wore a Prada dress adorned with miniature silver wear! On paper this sounds like a terrible idea! She could have really been skewered, at the Oscars, no less, but she took a chance and it worked. Zoe Saldana’s ruffled Louis Vuitton at the Globes set her apart with its plum color and beautiful detailing. Drew Barrymore’s Golden Globes nude Atelier Versace gown with crystal detailing on the hip and shoulder wasn’t like any other gown I had seen. SJP’s pale yellow Chanel Haute Couture at the Oscars featured a gorgeous, very unusual neckline. Unique touches and details make memorable fashion moments.

…BUT IN A GOOD WAY!
Zoe Saldana’s Givenchy at the Oscars was just too overwhelming. Half sparkle/Half explosion of ruffled poofy fabric… it had TOO many details competing for attention. Charlize Theron’s rosettes-on-the-chest Dior was a rare misstep for the normally flawless star. Tina Fey’s Golden Globes Zac Posen was a tea length mess.

STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF
No cookie cutter look for Mo’Nique! I love that her beautiful Oscar ensemble had personal and sentimental value. She wore an electric blue Tadashi Shoji gown and flowers in her hair in honor of her idol, Hattie McDaniel, the first African American to win an Oscar in 1940.

GAGA FOR GAGA
I think some of her choices are ridiculous, but isn’t that the point? Being over-the-top and theatrical is her whole M.O. and you know what? It works for her. For an award show like the Grammys, you tune in to see the outrageous outfits and she did not disappoint.

PRINTS ARE NOT CHARMING
…for the red carpet. If gorgeous stars can’t pull them off, well, then who can!? Even Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams at the Oscars and ‘True Blood’ star Anna Paquin and Meryl Streep at the Sags, could not make prints work. A trend best avoided.
