Glam Slam: The Bra Whisperer

I met “The Bra Whisperer” yesterday. Yes, that’s how Susan Nethero, the “Chief Bra Fit Stylist” and founder of {intimacy} lingerie boutiques, introduced herself to me. (Her business card even says “The Bra Whisperer” – how fun!) Susan and her team of fitters visited the Access Hollywood offices to show me, and a few of the ladies here, how their bra fitting process works. They arrived with bags of bras in several sizes for us to try on!

Susan was trained by the Queen of England’s Royal Bra Fitter and you may have seen her working her magic on Oprah. Let me tell you, this lady (and everyone who works for her) really knows what she is talking about. All of her fitters actually go to “Bra Fit Boot Camp!” Everyone is also friendly and warm and instantly put us all at ease.

I asked Susan if she and her fitting team could look at a woman and instantly tell that she is wearing the wrong size. She says they don’t judge people, but with 85% of all women wearing the wrong bra size, the odds are pretty good that most of us are not wearing the right bra.

I was one of those people. I thought I was a 34B, but that’s not the case. Susan tried several bras on me and I learned I am a 30B. I didn’t even know a size 30 bra existed! I learned that bras are made in sizes 30-46 and in cup sizes A to K!

Susan says one of the biggest mistakes people make is buying bras that are too big around the body. Most people think a bra’s support comes from the straps, but she explained that the support should come from around the body.

Susan taught us to lean over when putting on a bra, so you can adjust everything accordingly. For some of us that’s a bigger issue than others! Ha! She also taught us to buy a bra that fits when fastened on the loosest clasp because bras will eventually stretch out and as your bra stretches, you will move to the tighter clasp. (At {intimacy}, you can also bring your bras back and they will alter them for free if they get too loose.)

We each tried on several bras in different styles. For once in my life, the straps didn’t fall down and the bra didn’t ride up. A bra that fits, also creates cleavage I never had! One woman was so happy saying, “My boobs look so much better, they are never this high up!”

Susan says she always tries to optimize every woman’s shape. Her mission is to “lift up” women and she doesn’t just mean their breasts. The right bra can improve posture and even help a woman look 10 pounds lighter. It can improve self-esteem and body image.

Think about it. A bra is something you wear every day and whether you get your bras at Target or La Perla, it’s worth investing the time to find one that fits you just right.

After the fitting and back in my own ill-fitting bra, I felt a bit like Cinderella after midnight. What a difference the right bra makes!

Susan gave me a big hug and sent me off with, “We’re now breast friends!” I just laughed and laughed.
