Glam Slam: The First Lady’s New ‘Do

Michelle Obama’s banging new ‘do has been dominating the headlines since she revealed her new look late last week.

“You know, just like any woman, it’s like, I’m gonna be 50 in a little bit. I gotta keep a little spice in it,” she told us on Saturday. “I have few options for change. I mean there’s only so much I got. I can cut the hair, I can make it short, make it long — bangs were new.”

The President called her new bangs “cute” and we’re big fans of the fresh look too.

We asked Warren Tricomi Los Angeles celebrity hairstylist Kiyah Wright, who works with Kerry Washington, Jennifer Hudson and Ciara, to give us the 411 on the style.

GLAM SLAM: How would you describe the First Lady’s new hair style?

KIYAH WRIGHT: It’s a modern day bob with layers and bangs

GS: What did it do for Mrs. Obama as far as updating her look? Would you say it made her look younger?

KW: I think it took off over 7 years….she looks more beautiful and younger than ever.

GS: Who is this style good for as far as face shape and hair type are concerned?

KW: Bob cuts with bangs look great on someone with high cheek bones and more angular faces, oval faces. The least amount of cheek the better. The cut makes the face look rounder.

GS: What should you ask your stylist for to achieve the same look?

KW: Pictures always work great for me especially when getting a new look. They should say “Here’s the picture of Michelle Obama. Can you do this look? Can you do it so it will fit my face structure?”

GS: Is this style easy to maintain?

KW: Yes, it’s easy to maintain. A flat iron works perfectly for looks like this. This style requires little to no product. You can use a shine serum like L’Oreal Professionnel Mystic Oil and a light aerosol like my Muze aerosol hairspray to set it to keep the look all day.

GS: How else can you style it?

KW: You can use a 1 1/2 inch barrel curling iron for a tighter, more styled look. You can also use a “bumper,” which is a piece placed in the hair to give it extra height and shape, for a more formal look.
