Glam Slam: The Friday Five — Repair Your Summer Sins!

I don’t know how Jennifer Aniston does it.

She loves spending time outdoors and yet she’s always perfectly golden, never burnt and her hair is sun kissed, not brassy. It’s not fair!

If you’ve been out in the sun too much InStyle beauty director Amy Synnott-D’Annibale shares five ways to undo summer damage.

1. FADE SUNSPOTS
You enjoyed the sun. But the blotchy marks it left behind? Not so much. A few sessions with a Q-switch or Alexandrite laser (approximately $500 per treatment) can help you lighten up. Keep in mind: The results will last only as long as you protect your skin from the sun (in fact, some dermatologists refuse to use lasers on unrepentant sun worshippers). A prescription hydroquinone/retinol combo such as Tri-Luma ($150, triluma.com) can also help. Sensitive skin? Try a more gentle, over-the-counter option such as Clinique Even Better Skin Tone Corrector ($39.50, sephora.com).

2. FRESHEN UP YOUR BLONDE
Sunlight can turn even the most expensive highlights brassy. Much like an apple turning brown, the pigments in your hair break down when exposed to UV light, says cosmetic chemist Mort Westman. To reclaim your honey blonde highlights, many pros swear by Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Shampoo ($8, sallybeauty.com). The purple tint neutralizes any hint of redness.

3. GET BUFFED
After tip toeing through the season’s hottest and brightest colors (turquoise, fuchsia, coral) your nails are probably the color of a corn chip and in need of a resurfacing. “Toenails are thicker and more porous; they absorb the pigment in polish and so stain,” explains Jan Arnold co-founder of the nail company CND. The good news: It doesn’t require a pricey medi pedi to undo the damage. Since the stains only penetrate the top layers, you can simply grab an inexpensive buffer and start sanding.

4. SHINE ON
If sun, salt water and chlorine have sucked the life out of your hair, a deep conditioner (Kérastase Paris Masque UV Défense Active, $58, kerastase-usa.com) can help. But if you really want to say goodbye to frizz, consider a professional keratin treatment. Though it takes 3-4 hours and can cost upwards of $250, this professional smoothing treatment is like Botox for frizz: It doesn’t just soften the kink, it scares it into remission for a few months.

5. ERASE SCARS
When the temperature and humidity spike, many women find themselves breaking out like teenagers. By the end of summer, their normally smooth complexion is dotted with tiny red or brown scars (depending on skin color). To get rid of them, your best bet is the Fraxel laser. Though pricey (one session runs $800 – $1,000 and it usually takes multiple visits), it’s “the gold standard for indented scars,” says New Orleans dermatologist Mary Lupo.
