Glam Slam: The Friday Five: ‘Where The Wild Things Are’

Hollywood is wild on animal prints. Eva Mendes, Katy Perry and Sienna Miller are just a few stars who have let their animal instincts run wild on the red carpet. I love animal prints, but if you overdo it, you can end up on one of those “Don’t” pages with a big black bar over your face.

Melissa Magsaysay, Fashion Market Editor for the Los Angeles Times, says animal prints “should be worn sparingly in order not to look too wild.” Here’s how:

Tip 1: ACCESSORIES ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND

As with any bold print, integrating them into your wardrobe is easiest when done in small doses. Try a leopard print ballet flat or zebra print scarf worn with something solid and simple such as a black cashmere sweater and dark jeans.

Tip 2: ANIMAL PRINTS WORK BEST WHEN TAME

Animal prints are graphic and eye-catching by nature. There’s hardly any reason to wear the print in a loud color. Neutrals look best and mix well with things you probably already have – denim, black and cream. Be wary of neutrals such as khaki and olive, so the look isn’t overtly safari.

Tip 3: CHANNEL YOUR INNER ‘60s STARLET

The most chic way to wear animal prints is with a nod to the 1960s. Think about a slightly unkempt and sexy Brigitte Bardot look with animal print accents such as a clutch or leopard print faux fur swing coat. Or channel Audrey Hepburn and go with some sleek, black capri pants or simple, black a-line dress paired with animal print ballet flats or a cute cloche hat.

Tip 4: STRIKE THE RIGHT BALANCE BETWEEN BOLD PRINT AND SOLIDS

When wearing animal prints in larger quantities than a scarf or small bag, always be conscious of “cutting” the print so it’s not overwhelming. An animal print dress needs to be broken up at the waist or upper half. Slice the print in half with a great black belt. To cut it down even further, throw on a black blazer or shrunken denim jacket over the dress for a little edge and less print.

Tip 5: ONE IS ENOUGH

Wear animal prints sparingly. One item is enough whether it’s an accessory or garment. Pairing animal prints together, such as printed heels and a bag, will look costume-y and flat out cheesy.
