‘Glee’s’ Harry Shum Jr. Heads To Cyberspace With ‘Extraordinary’ Dance Series

Harry Shum Jr. is more than the football player and choir club member he plays on “Glee.” The 28-year-old dancer recently took his moves from the small screen to cyberspace, where he’s making his mark on the digital world.

Harry, who plays Mike Chang on the hit FOX series, choreographs and is one of the stars in “Step Up 3-D” director Jon Chu’s latest project, a web series titled the “The LXD: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers.”

Showing now on Hulu, the series follows a group of young people who discover extraordinary powers and face off in some harrowing situations, using dance as their means of expression, communication and power.

“I think [dance] is one of the first forms of communication,” Harry told AccessHollywood.com. “Before [people] could even learn language, everyone would know what they’d be doing and feeling through dance.”

According to Harry, Jon developed the online show, now on its eighth episode, to “give dancers the spotlight they deserve.”

“He wanted to create characters for [them]. He made these guys as superheroes, seeing that what they do is almost like a superhero, as far as the jumping and doing all these crazy things with their bodies,” Harry added.

Alongside Jon, Harry is one of the pioneers of the series.

“I think the goal is to develop as much of a platform as possible and try hopefully to turn it into a film. I think a TV show is possible too,” Harry said. “We choreograph the whole series. It’s definitely a passion project.”

Harry has played Mike on “Glee” for a year now, having made his debut four episodes into the first season of the musical FOX hit.

While this web series is his creative child, with a budding romantic story line for his character on the Emmy nominated “Glee,” Harry said he hopes Mike will see more on-screen talking time in the second season.

“I feel my character last year was quiet and more in the background. People always wonder if I know how to talk and when they hear me speak they are like, ‘Oh my God! That’s the first time I’ve heard your voice.’” Harry laughed. “I hope that they can hear it more. I have a love triangle, so I can’t wait to see what’s in store. I just hope that there’s a little more of Mike Chang and [viewers] see what he’s all about.”
