Nastia Liukin is a superstar in the gymnastics world, but now she’s hoping to be one in the fashion world as well, designing a new line of clothing for J.C. Penney.
Supergirl by Nastia just launched in the department store chain, and she told AccessHollywood.com about catching the designer bug.
“I always designed all of my leotards I competed in, so I’ve always had kind of like this passion for fashion growing up,” the Texas-based athlete said.
Nastia said in designing the line, she wanted to make sure the clothing was both trendy and budget friendly.
“With this line I really want it to be very cute [and] fashionable, but at the same time affordable and comfortable,” she explained. “But also… not just those things… I wanted to kind of have like a message behind it and that message is…when you wear it to feel empowered and to be able to go after your dreams and believe in yourself and to never give up.”
The collection is aimed at the younger generation – 8-12 year olds, and is priced between $11.99 to $21.99.
Nastia added that the clothes are definitely be age-appropriate.
“I think for the girls at this age it’s gonna be fun for them to be able to feel like they’re kind of looking like the older girls, but at the same time, it’s very mom approved,” she said.
In related Nastia news, the gymnast said she hasn’t decided yet whether she’s going to compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but if “Dancing with the Stars” came around, she might be interested in that opportunity.
“It’s a great show and I think it’s fun to be able to go outside of your element and do something that you have no idea what you’re doing,” she laughed. “A lot of people think the Olympians have an advantage with ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and I think that the only advantage that they have is to be able perform in front of a live audience.
“Everything else is so out of your element,” she continued. “I’ve never taken a dance class in my life.”
