Graham McTavish On Saying Goodbye To ‘The Hobbit’; The Return Of ‘Outlander’

Graham McTavish gathered with the cast of “The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies” in Los Angeles on Tuesday night for the final premiere of the franchise.

On the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre, he told Access Hollywood that although the Peter Jackson-directed trilogy is coming to a close, the bonds the cast and crew made with each other are strong.

“The good thing is that we’ve made those friendships over the last however many years and we do still see each other. Whenever we can we always get together,” he said.

Asked what the last memorable scene he shot for the franchise was, Graham said it was one with his character, Dwalin, near the end of the latest installment.

“The very end for me, when I’m trying to get to Thorin,” Graham said, hinting at the moment. “And it was very emotional. I knew it was going to be my last shot, and then, when they came back and said, ‘Yep. We’re good, we got it,’ and they announced a picture wrap, I just burst into tears immediately. It was quite embarrassing really, in some ways, surrounded by stuntmen.”

Graham wasn’t the only one shedding a few tears — saying goodbye to the franchise touched many.

“There was a lot of crying. It was very emotional stuff. Three years of your life with very close, intense work with people that — these relationships will last all my life,” he said.

The actor will follow up the conclusion of “The Hobbit” trilogy with the return of “Outlander” this April on Starz, where he plays the commanding Dougal MacKenzie.

“I was actually doing some ADR on it today and I got to see some of Episode 14 and it’s good,” Graham said of his show.

In a new teaser for the return of “Outlander,” there was a tiny scene where Colum, the Laird of the MacKenzie clan and Dougal’s older brother, was offering a warning, or possibly a threat, to Graham’s character.

“At the time, I thought, ‘Hey, steady on mate,'” Graham joked about Colum’s words in the clip. “Yeah, he gets a little upset with me, for good reason, possibly, from his point of view. But from mine, he’s not being very understanding. “

“Outlander” returns April 4, 2015 on Starz. “The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies” hits theaters on December 17.
