“Green Hornet” fans won’t be getting the present they hoped for during the 2010 holiday season.
The Seth Rogen-starring film, based on the crime-fighting hero of the ‘30s and ‘40s, has been moved from its planned December 22, 2010, release date to January 14, 2011, according to Deadline.
“We’re investing more in the film to have it 3-D,” Sony Pictures Entertainment Vice-Chair Jeff Blake told the site. “We love it. We believe in it. We’re going to finish ‘Green Hornet’ in 3-D and take nine months to do it right.”
He further explained that the work being done was not a 3-D conversion, like the recent “Clash of the Titans,” but rather an enhancement to the movie’s “great depth and scope.”
The holiday season will field a number of 3-D films, including “Tron Legacy,” “Yogi Bear” and the first installment of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” among others, making December competitive for theater space — as seen recently as “Alice in Wonderland” and other films forced a still-selling “Avatar” out of theaters. (The James Cameron blockbuster will be re-released in August with six additional minutes of footage.)
“It is purely a capacity issue,” Blake said. “There are simply not enough digital screens up and running with the theater system to juggle that number of titles.”
Though Blake denied rumors that the film was troubled, its production hasn’t been without incident. As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, the film was initially slated for July 7, 2010, and underwent several shake-ups during the run-up to production, including directorial and casting changes. “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” director Michel Gondry eventually signed on to helm the film.
