Gwendoline Christie Talks Brienne In ‘Game Of Thrones’: She ‘Never Gives Up’

Brienne of Tarth won’t be blaming Podrick Payne for taking his eye off of Arya Stark (who snuck away) during her big The Hound fight in “Game of Thrones” Season 4.

“You know that Brienne is blaming herself, because that’s the kind of woman she is,” Gwendoline Christie, who plays Brienne, told Access Hollywood at the HBO show’s Season 5 premiere in San Francisco.

“She takes it on the chin, she takes full responsibility and… I’m not so sure that Brienne’s in such a good place at the start of Season 5. I’m not sure that she’s entirely happy with what’s gone on,” the actress added.

From the latest Season 5 trailer, it appears Brienne may be going somewhere snowy in the weeks ahead in HBO’s epic fantasy drama, but the actress couldn’t much about that film snippet. She did, however, hint that Brienne will continue to grow as a character in interesting ways.

“Brienne of Tarth this year, again, what I love about this character is that every year we see the exploration of a woman — psychological exploration as she develops and changes and comes up against new challenges that can be physical, that can be emotional, that can be intellectual. She has to develop different sides of herself, she has to begin to develop some wiliness and her overriding sense of honor to the oath she has pledged takes her everywhere,” Gwendoline said. “And that woman never gives up!”

“Game of Thrones” returns for Season 5 on April 12 at 9 PM ET/PT.
