Healthy Hollywood: Ana Ortiz Stays Fit With Her Kids

Ana Ortiz, star of the hit Lifetime series “Devious Maids,” is always on the go, keeping up with two kids and a busy career.

The actress prefers variety when it comes to her fitness routine.

“I like to mix it up. I like to sort of do everything,” she said. “I like to play tennis, I like to run, I like to dance, I like to take a boxing class. For me it’s got to be a variety otherwise I get a little bored,” she told Healthy Hollywood.

Her favorite workouts, however, can include her two children.

“I live near a really beautiful hiking area, and hiking is something I can do with my kids or my family or my dog. I like to try to keep fit in as many sort of group things that I can do with my kids as well,” she said.

Her kids like to get in on the action and Ana, a paid spokesperson for the Active Family Project, launched the Play Soccer for a Change campaign to encourage other families to be active together.

“I get them into soccer class and they have a really, really fun time doing that,” Ana said. “That’s why this Active Family Project was such a good fit I found because [this is about] getting people together and showing people there’s tools and resources to have fun together as a family.”

Ana doesn’t let the healthy lifestyle stop there – she even includes her kids in preparing healthy meals.

“My daughter’s a little older now — she’s 5 — so she cooks with me,” Ana said. “When they see that they made it, they’re so much more inclined to eat it because they’re like, ‘I made this.'”

Ana said this trick works even better on a busy morning.

“Especially something like breakfast, which is so hard to get them to eat and it’s such an important meal because you’re sending them off to a full day of school,” she said. “So [my daughter] scrambles up the eggs, or she cuts up the fruit, or, you know, she helps me stir the water into the oatmeal. Whatever it is, she gets really excited about it and then, she’s much more inclined to eat it.”

Ana counts herself lucky that her little ones are adventurous eaters to begin with.

“We just had a big Indian food [meal]– isn’t that amazing! She was eating the chicken tikka masala like nobody’s business and so was my son,” Ana said.

When it comes to her own diet, Ana doesn’t limit herself too much.

“I try not to get too strict with myself. I’m such a foodie and I love to eat so I don’t want to make myself miserable,” she told Healthy Hollywood.

Ana uses simple tricks to stay fit.

“Unfortunately, the older I get the harder it is and, you know, I just have to sort of cut down on my portions and drink a lot more water with a meal.”

While the future of “Devious Maids” is up in the air, Ana took a fitting guest role in the new Shonda Rhimes’ produced series “How to Get Away With Murder.”

“My character is a soccer mom – with a secret. With a big huge gigantic secret,” said Ana.

While her on-screen roles may be very dramatic, in person Ana is as down to earth as any other soccer mom.
