Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday Part II — Are Celebrity Cleanses Healthy Or Not?

Juice fasts and detox diets are more popular then ever thanks to celebs like Demi Moore and Gwyneth Paltrow, who’ve boasted about their cleansing success stories. Nutritionist Keri Glassman stopped by our new show Access Hollywood Live on Wednesday to give Billy Bush and Kit Hoover the skinny on this latest celebrity trend.

“A cleanse is really a general term. To some it may mean no alcohol and sweets and to another it may mean no fast food,” states Keri.

These days most celebs and us regular folks think of cleanses as fruit and veggie juices and / or raw food. A cleanse typically lasts 3 to 5 days and eliminates most (if not all) solid food.

“Proponents of cleanses claim everything from increased energy, to improved immune system, glowing skin, better sleep and increased sex drive,” adds Keri.

Most importantly, the goal of a good cleanse is to put the body back on a healthy eating track — not to shed pounds fast!

“The big problem is that many people abuse them and use them as a quick weight loss tool. Going from fries and donuts to cleansing and then fries and donuts to cleansing is NOT healthy,” Keri notes. “If you are to do a cleanse, use it as quick start way to begin a healthier lifestyle. Have a game plan to incorporate more fruits into a balanced diet for the long haul! Some people do experience nausea, fatigue and dizziness on cleanses and others feel super energized.”
