Heath Ledger’s ‘Dark Knight’ Co-Star: ‘He’s Out-Villained Hannibal Lecter’

Heath Ledger passed away five months ago, but according to his co-stars in the latest Batman movie, his performance as the Joker could live on forever.

“The Dark Knight” will debut in theaters in two weeks, and stars of the film sat down with Access Hollywood’s Tony Potts to talk about the film’s performance that is already sparking Oscar buzz.

Christian Bale, who suits up for another fight with Gotham City’s criminals as Batman, said Heath possessed an uncompromising work ethic and an equally fierce dedication.

“He would never break character once in makeup and clothes,” Christian said. “Once he took that off, he was great company — a very joyous and laid back spirit. But as the Joker, he didn’t break it for a second.”

Aaron Eckhart, who does acting double duty as both Harvey Dent and Two Face, echoed Christian’s sentiments.

“When [Heath] goes, he goes. I just kind of hung on to him!” Aaron told Tony.

Heath shares a particularly intense scene with Batman newcomer Maggie Gyllenhaal, who was astounded after performing alongside the late actor.

“I was shocked by how free [Heath] was,” she told Access. “I think it’s rare, and special, and noteworthy and mind-blowing how free he was.”

Heath’s portrayal of the Joker is said to be in the league with film’s greatest villains – and according to co-star Gary Oldman – better.

“He’s out-villained Hannibal Lecter,” the actor said of Heath as the Joker. “I think it’s better than [Anthony Hopkins] in ‘Silence of the Lambs.’ Psychologically, it’s the most scary movie villain I’ve seen.”

Though Heath’s co-stars had high praise for his iconic performance, they couldn’t help but reflect on Heath’s tragic death.

“I learned from Heath. My fire got brighter by his fire,” Aaron said. “I will honor him in this movie and also as a human being that talked about his kid and showed me pictures — and was a big goof.”

Christian, who had hoped to work with Heath in future films, said it was hard not to notice Heath’s absence during promotion for “The Dark Knight.”

“I wish he was sitting here right now talking to you,” he told Tony. “I wish I had known him for many years to come.”

Heath’s turn as the Joker will explode on the big screen July 18.
