‘High School Musical 2’ Gets An ‘A’ On The Billboard Chart

The “High School Musical 2” phenomenon continues, as the soundtrack to the smash Disney Channel movie topped the Billboard 200 album chart in a big way.

With over 615,000 copies sold, the summer sequel’s soundtrack marks the 2nd-highest debut of 2007, falling just shy of Linkin Park’s “Minutes to Midnight” as the years top seller.

The Disney magic didn’t stop there, however, as “Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus” (Soundtrack) jumped back up two places to land at # 2 with 82,607 copies sold.

A new episode of “Hannah Montana” aired directly after Friday’s record-breaking premiere of “High School Musical 2,” which surely contributed to the 10% sales increase for Cyrus’ double-disc set.

Another double-disc offering, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds’ “Live At Radio City,” debuted at # 3 this week. Matthews and Reynolds (a renowned guitarist) have toured together numerous times, and last hit the charts with the # 2 debut of “Live at Luther College” in 1999.

The NOW 25 hits collection drops one place to land at # 4 this week, while the soundtrack to the “Hairspray” movie climbs a spot to come in at # 5 (despite selling 8% less than last week).

Last week’s champ, hip-hop group UGK, lands at # 6 this week with their latest album, “Underground Kingz.”

Fergie gets a little lift this week with a slight sales increase, pushing “The Dutchess” up one spot to come in at # 7.

The rest of the Top 10 didn’t fare as well. Jonas Brothers drop three spots to # 8, Plies takes a seven-spot plunge to come in at # 9, and Common falls three spots to land at # 10.

Sean Kingston continues to stay at the top of the Hot Downloaded Singles chart for the fourth straight week, but he’s facing some stiff competition from Kanye West. West’s latest single gets a little “Stronger” this week; coming within 4,000 downloads of dethroning Kingston from the top spot.

Soulja Boy makes an impressive leap this week, as the rapper’s “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” jumps five spots to land at # 3. And while Jonas Brothers may have taken a bit of a dive on the album chart, their single, “S.O.S.,” leaped 15 spots to come in at # 4!

As for the other new entry in the Top 10? You guessed it — “High School Musical 2” strikes again, with the Zac Efron / Vanessa Anne Hudgens single “You Are The Music In Me” debuting at # 9.
