How Did Armie Hammer’s Wife React To His Old Man Look In ‘J. Edgar’?

Armie Hammer is known for his good looks, but in “J. Edgar,” the actor spent a lengthy time in the makeup chair to play an older version of his real-life character, former FBI Associate Director Clyde Tolson. And the makeover resulted in a surprising reaction from his wife, Elizabeth Chambers.

“My wife saw me when she walked into the makeup trailer when we did the makeup test and she just started crying,” Armie told Access Hollywood on Thursday, on the red carpet at the “J. Edgar” gala during the AFI Fest 2011 in Hollywood. “She goes, ‘You’re going to be such a beautiful old man.’ And I go, ‘Look at me! I look awful. Really?’ I guess it means she loves me.”

The former “Social Network” actor – he played the Winklevoss twins – might not have been impressed, personally, by his aged look, but he expects to age a bit better than Tolson.

“They grew up in a very different time than we’re in now,” Armie said. “Then, it was like, ‘You’re not getting your vitamins!’ ‘Here, smoke your Lucky Strikes.’ We moisturize now. It’s a very different time. We wear sunscreen, so I don’t know that I’ll look that bad.”

“J. “Edgar” opens on November 9.
