‘Idol’ Recap: Final Three Face Off For A Shot At The Finals!

Maybe the way to win “American Idol” is not to let the judges pick your song.

The three contestants had to sing a song the judges chose, one the producers chose and one they chose themselves.

Simon Cowell picked “Wishing on a Star” by Rose Royce for Jordin Sparks. He admitted that even though it was his choice and she sang it “brilliantly,” he wished they hadn’t chosen what he called the “weird jazz arrangement.”

Paula Abdul chose “Roxanne” for Blake Lewis, and Cowell said it was imitative without being earth-shattering.

Things were better for Melinda Doolittle. Randy Jackson picked “I Believe In You and Me” for her, and he said she “blew it out the box.”

Lewis did better on the producer’s choice, “This Love” by Maroon 5. He also chose “When I Get You Alone” by Robin Thicke.

Jackson thought Sparks’ version of “I Who Have Nothing” was “very, very hot,” but Simon said he “hated the fact that a 17-year-old was singing a 60-year-old song.” He called her take on the classic “incredibly old-fashioned.”

Doolittle’s choice was “Woman,” and Cowell complimented her on “the little striptease” because she tossed off her jacket.

If Randy and Simon get their way, before the night is over, Melinda Doolittle will have a 50/50 shot at the “American Idol” title. Simon flat out says he’d like to see the former backup singer in the finals. That idea was seconded by Randy Jackson, who says if the voting is based solely on singing talent, Melinda and Jordin Sparks would end up competing for the “Idol” title.

This year’s finalists will be revealed tonight.
