‘Idol’ Taylor Hicks Sues Former Producer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (August 25, 2006) — A federal judge in Birmingham, Alabama, has temporarily barred a producer from selling early recordings by “American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks.

The ruling came after Hicks filed a lawsuit against William Smith of Nashville, Tennessee. Three songs written and sung by Hicks before he became a star showed up for sale on iTunes.

Hicks claims Smith and his company did not have the rights to the music.

Smith says he signed contracts with Hicks. In fact, Smith says he released the songs because he loves Hicks and he wanted to fend off bad reviews of Hicks’ single, “Do I Make You Proud.”

Smith says the songs are no longer for sale and that he’s not sure how many copies were sold. He says Hicks will get any royalties he is due.

The judge has scheduled a hearing for August 30th on whether to make the order permanent.
