Is Rodriguez Swimming Towards ‘Deadpool’?

Rumors are heating up that Robert Rodriguez (“Spy Kids,” “Sin City,”) has not only been approached and courted — but now offered the director’s chair — on “Deadpool,” Twentieth Century Fox’s “X-Men” franchise movie which would star Ryan Reynolds, who originated the popular comic book anti-hero role on the big screen in last year’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

According to the LA Times, talks between the studio and Rodriguez have “moved beyond the casual discussion stage and into the more substantive realm of deal points.” Despite the apparent demise of the character in “Wolverine,” there is obviously a lot of life left in the character.

Rodriguez is currently prepping “Machete,” a feature length version of one of the faux movie trailers seen in 2007’s double feature “Grindhouse,” and is presently in very good standing with Twentieth due in part to “Predators,” the sci-fi reboot he produced and brought in for what was (by today’s standards) a bargain basement budget of under $40 million. The Adrien Brody starring film, and the fifth to feature the Predator character, has grossed over $100 million worldwide to date since its July release.

Ryan Reynolds, who apparently is not busy enough with “Green Lantern,” (currently shooting in New Orleans and set to hit the big screen in 3D next summer), told MTV News at Comic-Con there is room for him to play Marvel Studio’s Merc With a Mouth in addition to DC Comics’ Emerald Gladiator, and that he remains committed to both franchises.

Rodriguez, a fan boy favorite from several features – including his co-directing work on 2005’s “Sin City” alongside comic book legend Frank Miller, his solid rock ‘em sock ‘em action turner “From Dusk Till Dawn,” and his “Mexico” trilogy of films featuring Antonio Banderas and Johnny Depp — would seem to be a perfect fit to helm the “Deadpool” film, tentatively set for a 2012 release.
