James Maslow & Peta Murgatroyd On ‘Dancing’ Chemistry

James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd took home a perfect score and topped the “Dancing with the Stars” leaderboard on Monday night and they know that part of their successful formula is their chemistry.

“We wouldn’t have had that dance if we didn’t have good chemistry. That’s why we’re doing so well together,” James told Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson on Wednesday. “It was awesome.”

Asked to describe their relationship, Peta called it a “working” relationship that is “fun.” She added that they “have a blast together.”

That partnership has gotten them through the tough times as well.

“We get along really well. … It is a lot of hard work. There are times when we’re upset with each other and stressed, but for the most part, I’m psyched to be with her and she’s psyched — I think — to be with me,” James said. “We’ve gotta spend every day together, so it would suck if we didn’t get along.”

On this week’s “Dancing,” producers showed a package before NeNe Leakes and Tony Dovolani hit the ballroom, that revealed those two had an argument during practice.

Asked about how they feel about their own pre-dance packages, James said the clips represent just a brief bit of time.

“You can’t take everything verbatim. … They’re cutting together a minute of an entire week of footage. They can kind of create what they want, but so far I think we’ve been pretty happy,” he said.

“I don’t think they’re trying to knock anybody down, I think that sometimes they just need to make things a little more interesting than they might have actually been,” he added.
