Jane Lynch Talks How She Was Almost Not Cast In ‘Glee,’ Her Sobriety & Married Life

Jane Lynch, who plays cutthroat coach Sue Sylvester on “Glee,” is opening up about her recent marriage, her long-term sobriety, and almost missing out on the chance to play America’s favorite TV bully-with-a-heart.

The 50-year-old star was already committed to two other shows (a project for ABC and Starz’s “Party Down”) when the offer for “Glee” arrived. She was initially put on a trial temporary status for her first four episodes of the now hit FOX series due to her prior commitments.

“We were keeping our fingers crossed that I got to stay,” Jane told More magazine, in an interview for their November 2010 issue.

Jane married psychologist Dr. Lara Embry in May (whom she dated for six months after the two met at a lesbian rights fundraiser) – something the star wasn’t sure would ever happen for her.

“I shouldn’t say this, but I’d never dated anyone that I wanted to marry. I didn’t think it was going to be out there for me,” Jane told the mag. “But the minute we were married, I felt the difference: I felt like I am no longer alone.”

The Emmy Award-winning actress takes pride in knowing that she has now accomplished two goals that many mothers have for their daughters, saying, “I got married—and I married a doctor!”

The comedienne, who recently hosted “Saturday Night Live,” has yet another accomplishment to be proud of – nearly 20 years of sobriety.

Jane (who says in the article that she admittedly comes from “ a real drinking culture”) decided to quit drinking in 1991, after realizing she was drunk every night and “hungover all the time.” She poured out a glass of wine and told a friend that she was “never drinking again.”

“Relatively speaking, my personal bottom was rather benign,” she told mag. “Had I known I’d be telling my story over and over again [at 12-step meetings], I would have made it a lot better.”
