Jason Castro Exiled From ‘Idol’ Island

Jason Castro was cut from “American Idol” on Wednesday night, singing his way out to the tune of none other than Bob Marley.

His dismissal was completely expected – Castro received some of the severest criticism of the entire season from the judges for his performance of Bob Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff” and Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man,” the latter during which he lost the words on Tuesday night.

“Jason, stand back,” Simon said after the Bob Marley cover on Tuesday’s show. “That was utterly atrocious. That is a song you do not touch. The arrangement was atrocious, the performing and the singing was as bad as I ever heard. That was like a first round audition massacre. I don’t know what you were thinking.”

And after the Dylan number?

“Jason, I’d pack your suitcase,” Simon said.

Before Castro was kicked off, Ryan Seacrest revealed that “American Idol” received its highest numbers of votes this season – nearly 51 million. Each of the top three contenders – Syesha Mercado, David Cook and David Archuleta were separated by only a million votes each.

The night also contained lively performances from Maroon 5 and season four runner-up Bo Bice.
