Jessica Biel, Isabel Lucas, Kenna And Lupe Fiasco To Climb Mount Kilimanjaroo For Charity

An initiative to raise awareness of the global clean water crisis and dubbed Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro, will take place this January.

Grammy-nominated musician, philanthropist, and “actionist” Kenna masterminded the expedition in which his friends, including Jessica Biel, Lupe Fiasco, Isabel Lucas, as well as many of the world’s brightest minds and major cultural influencers, will climb Tanzania’s Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The climb will not only raise awareness of the global clean water crisis, but also raise funds for The Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and PlayPumps International. All funds raised by Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro will be managed and distributed through the United Nations Foundation, the project’s charitable advisors.

For Kenna, the vision behind Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro stems from his drive to create a greater good for our youth and has personal meaning as his father was deeply affected by water-borne illness as a child in Ethiopia. Kenna has inspired his influential friends to join the climb and will include Jessica Biel, Lupe Fiasco, Isabel Lucas, with additional talent announcements scheduled to be released leading into the ascent.

The climbers will discuss the issue of water alongside educators who are leaders at the forefront of global issues. As a team they will be learning of solutions to the problem, discussing how to improve social awareness and embracing the idea that they are now the example for showing ways to take action and give back to those with little or nothing.

“We are “actionists” who are going to assimilate and enlighten the world on a human rights issue that is long overdue for attention” Kenna said. “My father suffered for over 10 years of his life with water-borne diseases while his friends and family died around him. It’s over 60 years later and we are living in a world where over a billion people are without clean and safe drinking water. It is unacceptable.”

“ My friends and I are taking a risk climbing Kili to stand at one of the highest points in the world and make the statement that we as human beings can stop the Global Clean Water Crisis if we take action now. Help us send water and save lives,” Kenna continued.

Leading up to the climb, the participants will intensify physical training to prepare for the seven day, fifty mile experience to the highest freestanding mountain in the world.

Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro will partner with its global sponsors, which include HP and PŪR Water Filtration.

“It’s been our vision since the early stages of this project that we would partner with those who saw our efforts as an opportunity to create change on a massive level,” said Brooke Gardner Fedro, Director, Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro. “We are inspired by HP and PŪR’s commitment to sustainability and look forward to our partnership heightening awareness of this devastating issue and ultimately saving lives.”

In addition to HP and PŪR, Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro is also being sponsored by First Ascent by Eddie Bauer. The expedition team will be completely outfitted in First Ascent with everything from baselayer, insulation and outer shells, to backpacks, duffels, and accessories to safely and successfully summit Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro beneficiaries include The Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, UNHCR and PlayPumps International.

The Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program is focused on reducing the sickness and death that result from water-borne illness caused by drinking contaminated water.

Over the last sixty years the UN Refugee Agency has protected, assisted and found permanent solutions for millions of refugees, and is one of only two organizations recognized twice with the Nobel Prize for Peace.

In addition to Facebook, MySpace and Twitter pages and profiles, Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro has launched the first phase of its highly interactive and media heavy website at www.summitonthesummit.com. Once fully launched, audiences will be able to make donations, join the effort and get regular updates through climber and or water issue related video and communication. During the climb, audiences will receive daily updates on the progress and experience of the participants.
