Joan Rivers has been placed in a medically induced coma, a source told Access Hollywood on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, the star was rushed to Mt. Sinai hospital in New York, after she stopped breathing during a routine surgery. She was previously in stable condition at the medical facility, the source said on Thursday afternoon.
Joan, 81, went in for throat surgery on Thursday at Yorkville Endoscopy. During the procedure, the entertainer stopped breathing and a call was made to 911, the source previously said. She was rushed from Yorkville to Mt. Sinai hospital at the time.

On Thursday evening, Joan’s daughter, Melissa Rivers, issued a statement.
“I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers,” Melissa’s statement read.

Earlier in the day, Mt. Sinai released a statement confirming Joan was at their hospital.
“This morning, Joan Rivers was taken to The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where she is being attended to,” read the statement from Mt. Sinai. “Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support. We will provide an update on her condition as it becomes available.”
E! also released a statement.
“E!, Fashion Police and NBCUniversal continue to send thoughts, prayers and love to Joan, Melissa and their entire family,” the statement read.
Joan last worked for E! on Tuesday.
