Jon Hamm: ‘I Don’t Have The Marriage Chip’

“Mad Men” star Jon Hamm is regularly spotted strolling the red carpet with ladylove Jennifer Westfeldt, but there are no plans for the two to walk down the aisle just yet.

“I don’t have the marriage chip, and neither of us have the greatest examples of marriages in our families,” the dapper star told the Sunday issue of Parade magazine. “But Jen is the love of my life, and we’ve already been together four times longer than my parents were married.”

The actor added that the pitter-patter of little feet isn’t a sound he is in a rush to hear either.

“I like kids but I also like the option to close the door,” he said. “Becoming a parent is a whole other life, and it doesn’t stop.”

On “Mad Men,” which just returned for its fourth season last weekend on AMC, Jon plays Don Draper, a hard-drinking, hard living advertising executive who has a penchant for the ladies and the dark side — and the actor revealed some of the character comes from his own father, who passed away when he was young.

”[His] smoking, drinking, and hard-living ways are pretty much my model for Don Draper,” the actor said.

Jon also opened up about losing both of his parents – his mother died while he was still in grade school, and his father passed away just as the actor entered adulthood.

“Losing both parents at a young age gave me a sense that you can’t really control life–so you’d better live it while it’s here,” he said. “I stopped believing in a storybook existence a long time ago. All you can do is push in a direction and see what comes of it.”
