Jordin Sparks & Russell Brand Spar Over Purity Rings At VMAs

Video Music Award host Russell Brand poked fun at the Jonas Brothers when he cracked a few jokes about the purity rings they wear, but not everyone was laughing — including “American Idol” Jordin Sparks.

Earlier in the night during his opening monologue, Russell made multiple off color jokes suggesting the teen super group use their celebrity to land dates.

“I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring,” Jordin, who also reportedly wears her own purity ring, told the crowd before she introduced T.I. at Sunday’s 2008 VMAs at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, “because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut.”

Following Jordin’s remarks, Russell returned to the stage and attempted to apologize.

“I didn’t meant to take it lightly,” the British funnyman told the crowd. “I don’t want to piss off teenage fans. Promise rings, I’m well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody.”
