Josh Duhamel Chatted With Ryan Seacrest Before Shooting Safe Haven Love Scenes With Julianne Hough

Josh Duhamel admitted he had a little chat with Ryan Seacrest before filming his “Safe Haven” love scenes with Ryan’s girlfriend, Julianne Hough.

“I just thought it would be cool if he and I had a man to man about the scene before we started shooting it,” Josh told Julianne as the two interviewed each other for Access Hollywood. “I was like, ‘Hey, just so you know, I totally respect you and your relationship. Nothing weird is going to happen, just so you know.’”

Josh tried smoothing things over with the speech, but it turns out he didn’t need to.

“And [Ryan was] like, ‘Yeah, I wasn’t even thinking about it,’” Josh recalled. “I walked away thinking, ‘Why would I feel compelled to do that? You only made him think about it when you didn’t even need to.’”

In the film, based on the novel from Nicholas Sparks, Josh plays widower Alex Wheatley, and Julianne plays Katie Feldman, a woman with a dark secret who Alex begins to fall for.

Julianne is known for being charming and cheerful, but Josh said when he first met her, she wasn’t as delicate as he expected.

“I expected Julianne Hough, the beautiful Julianne Hough, sparkly and beautiful and all those things. Dancer, performance background. I expected prim and proper,” he said when Julianne asked in our Access interview for his first impression of his co-star. “I got a dude who is probably more of a dude than me. That was the biggest surprise. I guess [that was] the biggest, [most] pleasant surprise, because I was expecting sort of prim and proper, and I got just the opposite.”

As for what Julianne thought of Josh?

“A sexy dork. You’re a sexy dork,” she said.

“Safe Haven” hits movie theaters on February 14.
