Kanye West On His Fashion Future: ‘I Have To Do Something To Change The World’

Kanye West is nothing if not ambitious – and the rapper-turned-designer wants to bring big things to the fashion world.

“I have to do some things that affect the world or affect culture, like I did with music,” the MC told Complex Magazine of his newfound career path.

While Kanye is often criticized for his public temper tantrums, the rapper said that he’s grown up in the wake of his mother’s untimely death in 2007.

“I look at my Grammy speech from last year and I cringe,” he said. “You should always be gracious in a situation like that because that’s their show. I came in as a bit of a hothead and now I’m completely respectful.”

“I can be a very level-headed person,” he added. “I would never spaz on MTV the way I did before. How the hell is a 29-year-old grown-ass man acting like a little bitch and getting all emotional? How spoiled can I get?”

Still, he only has one frustration as he looks back.

“The only thing is that I can’t talk to my mom anymore,” he said of mother Donda West, who died following complications from a cosmetic procedure in November 2007.

And for evidence of his maturity, he said, just look to his co-workers.

“The fact that I love to collaborate with people, I think, is a very non-arrogant thing,” he said. “I absorb information, and I want people to know where the information is coming from so those people can be in a position for people to listen to them and capitalize off of the genius that they bring to the table — because I only surround myself with geniuses.”

Among his high-profile collaborations is one with Louis Vuitton, on an upcoming shoe line that debuted at Paris Fashion Week in January.

“I’m not saying that I think I’m the best designer in the world, but what I’m saying is that I think I can become that,” Kanye said. “I want to be able to be mentioned in the same breath as the greats.”
