Kate Gosselin Defends Her ‘DWTS’ Gig: As A Single Mom, I Have To ‘Work Harder’

Kate Gosselin is fighting back after ex-husband Jon Gosselin made claims that her “Dancing with the Stars” job is taking precedent over her family.

“I am a working mom and cameras are on me, so people catch me traveling and working,” she said during an interview with Meredith Vieira on NBC’s the “Today” show on Tuesday, while promoting her new book, “I Just Want You to Know.” “I’ve got to work harder now more than ever because I am a single mom…[but,] in my heart, I am always in my kitchen baking and cooking for my kids, and I will always be there. It is a struggle to be here … I would rather be at home with them… I have to work. I have to provide for them. It’s a struggle every working mom, especially single moms, goes through.”

Despite the coast-to-coast travel required for the show, the reality star said she attempts to minimize the amount of time she’s away from her eight children.

“I am on the first flight as soon as the show lets me out… and that’s my night of sleep,” she said. “I get home and I dance and I am done by the time they get home from school and I spend the rest of the week with them. And it’s difficult.”

Kate said that even though her kids are caught in the middle of a messy divorce, she feels like they have gone unscathed by the split.

“They are the eight most fabulous kids on the planet. They’re strong, they’re loving, I don’t see anything negative they’ve taken from this,” she explained. “I see the kids and I becoming so much closer and they’re more open to me… They don’t like [the divorce,] I don’t think any child likes it. They still have their same innocent love for each of us.

“I make the most of every minute I have with them,” Kate added. “They know I have to work, they know that I have to go, they don’t like it. But when I am home, we make those little spots of time really big in our memories.”

She also dispelled rumors of drama on with her fellow contestants on “Dancing,” saying, “I love them… most of them I will stay in touch with. We have so much fun. It is like a big family unit… I laugh so hard when I’m with them.”
