Katharine McPhee Hopes Smash Globes Nomination Will Bring In More Season 2 Viewers

“Smash” is revving up for its big Season 2 premiere on NBC on February 5, and Katharine McPhee is hoping the show’s Golden Globe nomination for best Television Series will prompt more people to tune in for its return.

“It’s not only a great celebration for what we did last season, but another way to get everyone excited and people who maybe didn’t know about ‘Smash,’ to maybe tune in for a second season,” Katharine, who plays Karen Cartwright, told Access Hollywood on Thursday. “I think it’s all… perfect timing for us.”

But the actress (a former “American Idol” runner-up) said she was completely shocked when she heard about the show’s nomination, which pits it against CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory,” Showtime’s “Episodes,” HBO’s “Girls” and ABC’s “Modern Family.”

“I actually kind of thought you were joking this morning,” Katharine said, referring to her co-star, Megan Hilty. “I sincerely didn’t know that the nominations were being announced this morning.”

Megan, who plays Ivy Lynn on the show, said the mood on the “Smash” set on Thursday was one of celebration.

“Everyone’s been coming in and hugging us,” she said.

For Anjelica Huston, who plays Eileen Rand, the “Smash” nomination was made sweeter by the fact that two of her relatives were also in nominated groups.

“My brother’s nominated,” she said, referring to Danny Huston, who is up for best Actor In a Supporting Role In A Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television, for his work in Starz’ “Magic City.”

“And my nephew’s nominated,” she added, referring to Jack Huston, whose HBO program, “Boardwalk Empire” is up for best Television Series – Drama at the Globes. “We’re — all three — in different shows, so it’s a very exciting moment for us.”

“Danny’s in Miami and Jack is here, doing ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ but we’re, of course, always connected being Hustons,” she added.

As for the “Smash” nomination, Anjelica said it’s a great moment.

“It’s huge… in terms of the work that is put on the show, particularly form these fantastic girls – Kat and Megan. It’s just terribly well deserved,” she said. “And we’re really happy about it.”
