Katy Perry: Growing Up & Finding Strength Inspired Roar

Katy Perry had a furry fashion moment at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards and she revealed that her dress was inspired by her new single, “Roar.”

“I did that on purpose,” Katy told Access Hollywood guest correspondent Coco Jones about her knee-length leopard print dress, complete with fur-esque pieces across the top.

The singer also opened up about her new single, “Roar,” which she performed under the Brooklyn Bridge on a stage that was set up to look like a boxing ring.

“The inspiration behind that song is just about speaking up for yourself,” Katy told Coco. “And not letting yourself get in the way because… everybody talks about bullying and things like that and while that is important, sometimes you are your own biggest bully. Sometimes, you are the person that gets in the way of everything — your success, your personal relationships.”

Katy said the song comes from realizing a few things about herself.

“For a while, even though I was coming off as totally with it, professionally and everything, maybe I was a little immature personally,” Katy said. “And so I finally just started garnering strength, and that’s what I wrote the song. [It’s] about… becoming stronger and speaking up for myself and making myself roar, essentially.”
