Following the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy, radio stations have pulled Ke$ha’s “Die Young” from the airwaves, and the singer is now speaking out.
“I’m so so so sorry for anyone who has been effected by this tragedy. And I understand why my song is now inappropriate. Words cannot express,” she Tweeted.
In another Tweet that has been removed, the singer claimed she was made to sing the ill-timed lyrics, which were recorded well before the horrifying events of last week.
“I understand. I had my very own issue with ‘die young’ for this reason. I did NOT want to sing those lyrics and I was FORCED TO,” she wrote on December 18.
In related radio news, Foster the People’s 2011 hit song “Pumped Up Kicks,” which includes the line, “All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you better run, better run, outrun my gun,” has also been yanked from radio.
In October 2011, the band (Mark Foster, Mark Pontius and Cubbie Fink) spoke with Access Hollywood about the controversial lyrics.
“I wanted to tell a story about bullying,” Marc told Access at the time. “It’s not condoning gun violence at all, in the contrary. It’s kind of showing how ugly things can get, when you’re an outcast or a bullied kid.”
