Kid Rock Cited For Misdemeanor Battery Over VMA Scuffle With Tommy Lee

Kid Rock was cited for misdemeanor battery following a physical altercation between him and Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Kid Rock received the citation after police reported to the Palms Hotel and Casino shortly after 10 PM Sunday according to the Associated Press.

Officer Bill Cassell said Kid Rock was not taken into custody.

The fracas between the two former husbands of Pamela Anderson, who presented at last night’s show, erupted while Alicia Keys was performing “Freedom ‘90” on stage.

A source who witnessed the event told Access Hollywood that Tommy Lee was sitting with magician Criss Angel. The two went over to see Sean “Diddy” Combs, who was seated in close proximity to Kid Rock. The rap-rocker was not in his seat at the time.

Carson Daly also witnessed the event.

“From our vantage point it looked like Tommy Lee went over to say hello to P. Diddy ‘cause Kid Rock was out of his seat,” the former MTV “TRL” presenter told Access. “Kid Rock came back to his seat and all hell broke loose.”

People immediately gathered around the fracas and security rushed over to the scuffle. In video, posted later in the evening on MTV.com, Rock managed to keep his cigar in his mouth during the heated conflict.

According to MTV presenter Sway, just one punch was thrown.

“I can’t say who started it. Tommy Lee took a blow,” he told Access Hollywood, backstage. “It was [over] so quickly. If you blinked you would have missed it.”

Rap producer Rich Nice, seated two tables away from the scene told the AP he thought Lee instigated the conflict.

“It looked like Tommy Lee initiated it because Kid Rock was ignoring him,” said Nice. “And Tommy Lee kind of antagonized him. And then when Tommy Lee stood up, it looked a little weird, like ‘Yo, what?’ When Tommy stands up is when Kid hit him the first time with a backhand and then Tommy Lee looked like he was trying to get at him to aggressively retaliate and then Kid Rock hits Tommy Lee again — bong.”

Lee can be seen in the video being dragged away by a man believed to be a security guard. Both men were forced to exit the show.

Lee was taken outside by security, while Kid Rock was allowed to walk out on his own, according to MTV.com.

“I never hit nobody for nothing before,” MTV.com reports Rock saying outside the venue. “I told him to shut the f— up.”

Angel left the event shortly after Lee. The two were later spotted party hopping in the city, following the fracas.

It was unclear what the scuffle was over, though immediately following the incident speculation surfaced the fight had to do with Pamela Anderson. Lee interrupted Anderson several times while she presented on stage at the VMAs. Anderson attended the event with magician Hans Klok.

Following the scuffle, actor Jamie Foxx made a reference to the incident from the VMA stage saying, “let’s stop all of this “white on white crime.”

Fox told Access Hollywood at an after party for his upcoming film “The Kingdom,” the idea for the line came from his co-star. “Well Jennifer Garner actually wrote the line for me and mentioned I should [point out] the white on white crime,” he recounted. “It almost turned into the Source Awards.”

Rock could face up to six months in jail, but that would be an uncommon punishment, Officer Cassell told the AP.

This is not the first incident involving the two men. In November of 2006, Kid Rock allegedly kicked down a door at the MGM Grand following the Billboard Music Awards, in an attempt to find Lee.
