Kristin Chenoweth has taken a bit of heat for her latest role as a gossipy, calculating Christian community leader on ABC’s, “GCB,” but the beautiful star says the show mocks hypocrisy, not true Christianity.
“You actually did grow up singing in the church, right?” Kit Hoover asked Kristin on Friday’s Access Hollywood Live.
“That’s exactly right! That’s what cracks me up about any controversy there’s been about the show,” Kristin, 43, said of the comedy, which is based on Kim Gatlin’s book, “Good Christian Bitches.” “I wouldn’t do anything that made fun of my religion. I just wouldn’t!
“There’s a difference in making fun of and having fun with, and this is our world,” she added. “That’s how I grew up.”
In addition to her new show, the Tony Award-winning singer/actress is touring to promote her new album, “Some Lessons Learned,” showcasing her incredibly full voice.
“The voice – how is it so big and so powerful coming out of such a little person?” Billy Bush asked Kristin, who measures in just shy of 5 feet tall.
“I know that the shorter the larynx, the higher the voice—which obviously makes perfect sense with my speaking voice, but I don’t know,” Kristin answered. “I think training had a lot to do with it – my voice teacher opened my voice. I grew up singing gospel and country music and then opera — that kind of sound – came to me later in life in college.”
Adding, “It took five years, but I trained hard. I worked hard.”
