Krysten Ritter Reveals How She Got James Van Der Beek To Strip Down

“Don’t Trust the B— in Apt 23” fans will get quite the James Van Der Beek treat in an upcoming issue of People magazine, thanks to Krysten Ritter.

The actor will be seen riding a horse with no pants in the mag, something James’ co-star encouraged him to do.

“I convinced James when they pitched the idea. He was kind of afraid,” Krysten told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Tuesday’s Access Hollywood Live.

The shoot had a lasting effect on James, according to Krysten.

“He said he smelled like horse down there for four days,” she said with a laugh. “I told him, ‘James, you have to do this, we need this for the show. We need something big and controversial.’”

“Will there ever be a love connection between [your characters]”?” Kit asked.

“You never know, we love each other… I think at this point it would be weird if we went there… it’s like family,” she explained. “But I will say, I always think of James like family.”

James is appearing in People in real life and on the ABC comedy, something Krysten can appreciate, but doesn’t excite her beyond that.

“In this episode, when he’s on the cover of People and he’s naked and he’s doing pushups without his shirt on, I’m like I can’t watch this,” she continued.

But added with a smile, “He does photograph very well.”

“Don’t Trust the B— in Apt 23” airs Tuesdays at 9:30/8:30c on ABC.
