Murray Bartlett joins “Glee’s” Jonathan Groff and Frankie J. Alvarez tonight in HBO’s new series “Looking,” about a trio of gay friends living life in San Francisco. But, it’s not the Australian actor’s first time on the cable network.
Murray (an alum of “Guiding Light”) appeared in a popular episode of “Sex and The City” — “All That Glitters” — which dealt with one of Carrie Bradshaw’s favorite topics – footwear.
“It did involve shoes. I was a shoe distributor,” Murray told Access Hollywood when we spoke with him at the Television Critics Association Winter Tour. “I was Carrie Bradshaw’s gay best friend for an episode and I took her to brunch and I took her to a club that you need a key to get in. I was like the fun guy that she could go out with when her boyfriend wanted to stay home and watch football and eat a bucket of chicken.”

Murray and his “Looking” co-stars — Jonathan and Frankie — actually had a group viewing of the show when they were filming their series in San Francisco.
“Frankie and Murray and I watched his episode together and we were like, ‘Look at your like flava sava!’ He had this like weird like late ‘90s, early 2000s… soul patch,” Jonathan laughed. “I mean, Murray would look good in any facial hair as proof by his moustache — he’s rocking that moustache in [‘Looking’] — but yeah, it was so fun to watch him. He was great in it. It was a real blast to watch that episode.”

The men’s new show has some things in common with “SATC,” in that it follows a group of close friends as they live their lives and deal with struggles in romance and career, but Jonathan said “Looking” stands on its own.
“I’m such a fan of ‘Sex and The City’ and ‘Girls.’ I’ve seen every episode of every season at least one time and so to be in the same breath as those shows is exciting to me and I think that there’s maybe an audience crossover,” Jonathan told Access. “If you like ‘Sex and The City’ and you like ‘Girls,’ maybe you’ll like ‘Looking’ ‘cause it’s about finding love and relationships and friendships. But certainly, the tone and writing and style of the show is very different and I think once people watch it, they’ll see that.”
“Looking” premieres tonight at 10:30 PM ET/PT on HBO.
